Walkways and steps
Flagstone, pavers and natural steppers, laid on compacted granular base with edges that hold. Steps built to code rises so nobody thinks about them — which is the point of a good step.
The patio you'll still love in ten winters. Walkways, steps and retaining walls built on proper base work — because in freeze-thaw country, the part you never see decides whether the part you love lasts.

From a grill pad to a full outdoor room. The visible choice is the stone; the durable choice is the eight inches under it, and we do not economize down there. Ballpark for budgeting: installed patios in this region commonly run per square foot in the mid-teens to mid-twenties depending on material and access — your written quote pins it exactly.
Walls hold back real force, and in freeze-thaw country a wall without drainage behind it is a countdown. We build with proper base, backfill and weeping — and we will tell you honestly when a slope wants regrading instead of a wall. Structural walls above certain heights involve engineering; we flag that in the consultation, not after.
A surprising amount of our stone work starts with a sentence like “my mother’s front step has gotten dangerous.” Uneven walkways, sunken pavers, steps with inconsistent rises — these are trip hazards that get worse each freeze, and fixing them is usually a day’s work, not a renovation. If someone you love is navigating a walkway you don’t trust, have us look at it. We’ll tell you plainly whether it needs a re-level, a rebuild, or just a handrail — and a handrail is sometimes the honest answer.
Heaved pavers, a sunken step, a wall starting to lean — hardscape problems announce themselves early and get expensive late. We repair and re-level existing work, including work we did not build, and we will tell you when a repair is money well spent versus when the base underneath has failed and honesty costs less than patching.
Photos of the area with the form above mean we arrive with real options.
Material choices, scope and a written price. We quote what we will build, not a teaser.
Excavation and compacted base done right — the unglamorous part that makes it permanent.
Set, cut, swept and compacted. Built for this climate's winters, not a brochure's.
Pavers are uniform, budget-friendlier and easy to repair; natural flagstone is singular and ages beautifully but costs more in material and labour. We price both in the consultation so the choice is yours with real numbers.
Anything on skipped base work will. Proper excavation depth, granular base and compaction is exactly what prevents it — which is why we talk about base so much.
Roughly April through November, ground conditions permitting. Winter consultations get first pick of spring build slots.
Less than you'd think. Most walkways and steps are one to three days; patios run longer depending on size. We keep access to your door open throughout, tidy the site every evening, and leave the property cleaner than we found it — that's not a promise on a brochure, it's how you get referred in a small town.
