Why timing beats quantity

Most disappointing lawns are not underfed — they are fed at the wrong moments. Cool-season grasses like the bluegrass and fescue blends on most Ontario properties do their real growing in spring and fall, then hunker down through July heat. Our program follows that rhythm: a wake-up feeding once the soil warms, a slow-release summer application that supports the lawn without pushing tender growth into a drought, a fall feeding that rebuilds roots, and a late-fall winterizer the lawn banks for a fast green-up next April. Four visits, each doing a different job.

Questions we hear a lot

When should fertilizing start in spring?

Once the soil has warmed and the lawn is actively growing — in the Kawarthas that is usually mid-to-late May, not the first warm week of April. Feeding dormant grass mostly feeds the weeds.

Is it safe for kids, pets and the lake?

We use granular products applied at label rates and tell you any re-entry time — for most of the program it is simply once the lawn is dry or watered in. Waterfront and septic properties get adjusted products and buffer zones so nothing we apply ends up in the water.

Do I still need this if I mulch my clippings?

Mulched clippings are good practice and return some nitrogen, but they cannot correct soil that is short on nutrients or rebuild roots before winter. Clippings top up; the program is the actual meals.

How many applications does a lawn really need?

Four well-timed applications cover almost every residential lawn here. We would rather skip one a lawn does not need than sell you a six-step program built for a different climate.

Can fertilizer alone fix a thin, patchy lawn?

No — and anyone who says otherwise is selling bags. Thin lawns usually need overseeding and sometimes aeration alongside feeding. We tell you which on the first visit.

Do I need to water after an application?

For most of our program, a normal rain within a few days does the job, and we'll tell you at each visit if that application wants watering-in sooner. If you're on a well or watching your water use, say so — we'll time applications to the forecast instead of your hose.
